this skirt is HURT. i thought i broke my toe , but it turns out it is just severely bruised. like, it hurts to put ice on it. it's my middle toe on the right foot. number 8 toe, as B numbered it. it doesn't always hurt to walk, but it does hurt whenever i have to stuff it in a shoe and on stairs in particular.
and HOLY SHIT did i hurt when i accidentally kicked a trash can at work today. i honestly had tears in my eyes and thought i was going to have some kind of reputation as an office-crier. i cry a lot, like when i tripped and hurt my toe in the first place, but i will NOT cry at work. every woman's got to set some boundaries.
as if i didn't have enough to whine about, I also have some poison ivy. it started as a small sample on my elbow and has spread onto my tummy. it is really quite contained and nowhere near the worst example of a reaction. but it is itchy and i like to whine.
and it's tuesday and none of this crap seems to be getting any better. so i took a benedryl with a glass of wine and might just fall asleep at the helm.
other than injury, my weekend was filled with SKIRTS! k and i (and the dog) went for an 8mi run with our sister j in newport on saturday. it was warm - verging on hot - and there were some rolling hills and right as i was about to complain about the lack of hydration we passed another skirt! i was so so so excited, but didn't manage to grab a picture with my phone. also, that's creepy. i did say hello to both the skirt and her man.
Question: when you're running, do you say hi to other runners? waive hello? nod your head? or just run by?
personally, i like to greet every other runner. i hope other runners like it as much as i do. i sincerely enjoy being a part of this strange community. even when i am wearing spandex shorts and not a skirt like i should have been.
wine's kicking in . or the benedryl. or both. until next time, fellow skirts.
i refused to cry at work today . . .
. . . and i did it in a skirt!

Mount Grey-skirt
this little skirt hiked 11 miles all over mount greylock, its trails, and a two mile stretch of the AT. the summit was almost worth taking one of the most difficult trails up the goddamned mountain. most gratifying, however, is how much better my skirts will now look.
so K, the dog and i decided to do the "greylock in the round" tour of the mountain and figured that from all the running and day hikes and mild camping we've done this summer, we would be fine for some more strenuous hiking. we also found it was the perfect spot for our first backpacking camping trip. we've done plenty of car-camping trips, but none where we have to carry our tent in on our packs.
i forgot to factor in the 30 lb pack we had on our backs.
at one point, i caught my foot on a tree root and although i only tripped, because of the damn pack, i went DOWN . . . i saw myself falling and could do nothing to regain my balance.
anyway, i didn't pass any other skirts climbing mt greylock. a few other ladies, most of whom were wearing pants. lame. if i wouldn't have been panting too hard to speak, i would have told them that the only real way to climb a mountain is in a skirt.
i told my boss that i climbed a mountain this weekend and he just stared at me, with his mouth open a bit. he wanted to know if there were trails or if we just scaled rock walls. i told him we weren't repelling or anything, but the trail had quite a few moments trying to find a foot hold in the craigs of the mount.
there were many unbelievably strenuous parts of the trail, but also a few flatter, pleasant areas. oddly enough, the flattest most enjoyable stretch of the hike was the portion that coincided with the appalachian trail. so although we took a more challenging route, i know there are other paths up the mountain. too bad K didn't map out those easier routes.
oh i almost forgot to mention the bears! there was a black bear and her two cubs just three campsites down from us. we didn't go get pictures since dogs and bears don't mix very well, but we were pretty pleased there was a bear box at each campsite. pretty pleased.
things that need to happen before our next hiking/camping trip:
1. more bug spray
2. learn how to light a campfire with wet firewood
3. find a pack that fits my tiny torso better
(stay tuned for product reviews)
4. hiking skirt with tighter compression shorts underneath
(this might also be called finding clothes that fit)
5. practice. however one practices these type of things.
oooooo i just love lists. i promise to include a feature with upcoming athletic events. fun fun.
i hiked part of the at . . .

In Re: Skirts
hello, again.
yes, i am back for more. i was going to space out some of my initial posts, lest everyone get the idea that i will be writing every day. that's just not feasible, as i have things to do and skirts to wear. but, according to facebook feed, there are some misconceptions about skirts i think i need to clear up right now.
running skirts especially have built-in compression shorts. many other types of athletic skirts do as well. i am thinking of a certain mountain hardware skirt i have (my 'hiking skirt') which is a pair of looser-fitting shorts with a sheer, quick-dry skirt on top.
the compression shorts should eliminate the need for body-glide or other anti-chafe gels. in fact, the compression shorts/ skirt combo often work better than suit skirts or any other types of skirts in the chafing department.

the best part about a good running skirt is that the skirt and/or the shorts underneath are lighter weight fabric than separate shorts-and-skirt combo. (except for nike running skirts, which are incredibly thick) lovely for the summer, when you really want to be wearing short, spandex shorts but don't have the inner thighs, wherewithall, and confidence to do so. also, why would you, when you can wear a skirt?!
other skirts i love are tennis skirts. the fit can be more difficult, since the material has a greater stretch and can often be more loose-fitting. contrary to what your love handles might imply, you really want a tighter fit when running to doing other athletic activities.
under armour makes a super great tennis skirt, with the spandex being particularly spandex-y. other tidbit about tennis skirts is that then can be a bit longer than a running skirt. so if you don't like that, or are short (like i am) pay close attention to the length.
so that's my skirt review. for now at least. we're packing for a trip to mt. greylock in western mass this weekend. should be a serious hike, complete with 20 lb pack, pack in and out camping, and the dog. there may or may not be a skirt involved.
for now, i took the dog out tonight . . .

Intro
oooooo hello, everyone!
so K and i were hiking last weekend, and as i slid down half of the Blue Hills on my bum, i thought to myself, i ought to blog about this. not because i am some kind of amazing athlete (i'm not) or because i am doing unbelievable feats of stamina (only small ones) or because i am living some kind of enviable life (not even close), but because i'm wearing a goddamned skirt while attempting to do so.
my skirt got awfully muddy last weekend, as it was raining on our hike. it was also my first hike with a 20lb pack on my back. but thank god i had my hiking skirt so i didn't look ridiculous.
yes i have a hiking skirt. i also have a running skirt. and walking skirts and work skirts and special test-taking skirts and sweatshirt skirts. don't get me wrong, i am a big fan of pants, too. i just really like doing athletic things in skirts. here are some of the reasons:
1. ventilation
2. versatility (so i don't have to change immediately)
3. adorableness
4. freedom of movement
5. i swear it makes my legs look leaner, longer, and overall more defined.
that last one might be my biggest reason.
there are many other reasons to sing the virtues of running skirts, but i have to save something for later posts.
for now, let me say that i ran three miles today . . .
. . . and i did it in a skirt!
